I imagine life in a firehouse is a bit like lifein a prison. You have a certain amount of time to kill before your sentence is up, and much of that time is spent swapping stories. Most yarns get told so often, both the teller and the listener are already painfully aware of each tiny detail.
Occasionally, someone will remark,“Somebody ought to be writing this stuff down,” as if the worn-out tales are of such noteworthy substance, society at large would be the poorer if they slipped into oblivion. Taking the bait, I started writing—not all of the stories, only mine. After all, the only facts I could be sure of were the ones I was directly involved with, and thus, the only ones I felt I could share, with any sense of accuracy.
Just a few dozen of the thousands of events seemed noteworthy, so the vast majority of them remain un-chronicled, as they should. I usually wrote each narrative shortly after it occurred, while the memory was fresh and the images were still vivid in my mind. I then clicked the“SAVE” icon on the word processor and left the writing buried on the computer’s hard drive—sometimes for decades. It was not until my career was winding down that I seriously considered making a book out of them.
If you are a fireman and read the book it will be very familiar to you—you’ve made hundreds of calls just like these; in fact, your stories might be much better. If you’re a civilian, curious about life in the fire department, the stories might surprise you. It’s not exactly the job many folks think it is. It’s a whole lot more—somegood, some bad.
The stories range from fires to floods, births to suicides, escaped parrots to trapped kittens, crazy civilians to crazier firemen.
Some days it felt like you were a performer in the circus, while everybody clapped. Other days you felt like the guy with the shovel, following the elephants while everybody laughed.
Just try and keep in mind this book was written by a fireman, not a professionalwordsmith who knows how to dangle his participles without anyone noticing.I think my best writing was done on various bathroom walls during my Junior High School years.
Alas, nobody thought to save it.$1

Good Tale.
I grew up in a suburb of Dallas where my Dad worked as a fireman. This book helped me with understanding the mental and physical strain that shaped my home life as a firefighters daughter. Every relative of a fireman should read this book, as it will change how you view that person. My current boyfriend is also a Dallas Fireman and I know that in reading this book our relationship can run a bit smoother. These are true stories that I have heard again and again and I am so grateful fir Mr. ADAIR for sharing. Thank you, Gilly's daughter.
Jay Adair 24 Hours.
I chose this book to see how it parallels my career as a firefighter. Amazingly, a number of his stories sounded like he was writing about my experiences. Jay did a fantastic job of telling it like it is in the fire service. Your story provides once again, that it doesn't mater what your geographical location, the job is filled with the same things; the good, the bad, the happy, the sad, and most of all the brotherhood that no-one really understands outside the circle of the Fire Service. The greatest job in the world. It is truly a calling for the chosen few. Great job, Bro.
This is a glimpse behind the scenes at life in almost any fire department in America. The author's descriptions are witty and entertaining, while at the same time giving the reader a true look at life in a firehouse. Firefighters deserve much more respect for what they do than they receive, and hopefully this will open some eyes as to what they really face on a regular basis.
Good read. Especially liked the format of short stories. Made for great stopping points for those of us that read over a period of time. Enjoyed this book greatly.
Without trying to be biased since I have worked with this fireman at the station this book is a must read.

Being a part of the DFD I can relate to his every detail of training, paramedic school, Spam recipes, as well as individual 911 calls, both good and bad. This is one of those books you can't easily put down, where you can glean the humor of everyday life at the station and how he, we, may deal with the stress of the job. There are traumatic as well as silly 911 calls that all go answered and quite often a chuckle on most every page. Having worked with him on occasion over the years I can attest to his honesty and quick wit. The Spam recipes brought back memories of many stories told of his prowess in the culinary arts.

Highly recommended and it will give you an insight into the daily life of fire fighting rarely seen unless you been there.
Mr. Adair worked with my father in Dallas, TX. When I saw him at my Dad's funeral recently, I searched for him on the internet, hoping to find contact information. Instead, I found his book, "24 Hours At A Time". I immediately bought the book and enjoyed reading all Jay's stories. Every fireman has stories, and many of them are humorous, but some are also heart wrenching. Realizing I would not hear anymore of my Dad's stories, I wanted to read Jay's. If you had or have a fireman in your family, or maybe as a close friend, I encourage you to read this book. Pinky would love this book, Jay.
